Law and Order Situation in KP Spirals Out of Control.

PESHAWAR: – The law and order situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has reached alarming levels, with incidents of target killings, extortion, and drug proliferation becoming rampant. The worsening security environment has left citizens in a state of fear and insecurity. Meanwhile, police leadership, including the Police Chief and senior officers, appears to be preoccupied with postings and transfers instead of addressing the escalating challenges. According to sources, the province has witnessed a surge in criminal activities, with target killings now a routine occurrence. The menace of extortion is on the rise, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is reportedly turning into a hub for drug trafficking. Despite the growing concerns, the top police officers seem more engaged in administrative matters, particularly postings and transfers, often influenced by political interference. The recent amendments to the Police Act 2017 have exacerbated the situation, as the police have been brought under the control of the provincial government. This change has allegedly opened the doors for political influence in police matters, significantly hampering their operational independence. Both former and current senior police officers have voiced their concerns regarding these amendments, warning that such interference undermines the force’s efficiency and credibility. The gravity of the situation was highlighted this week when five individuals were killed in broad daylight in an urban area of Peshawar. These incidents reflect the weakening writ of the government and the lack of proactive measures by law enforcement agencies. Furthermore, attacks on police personnel and the tragic loss of lives have become almost a daily occurrence, further demoralizing the force. Justice Atiq Shah, during a hearing in the Corridor Bail case involving the Information Advisor, expressed deep regret over the deteriorating situation. He remarked that the unchecked proliferation of drugs in the province is destroying the future of its youth. He criticized the police and other concerned authorities for their inaction, accusing them of being either oblivious or too distracted by administrative reshuffling in peaceful districts. The citizens of KP are calling for immediate action. It is imperative that the provincial government, the Police Chief, and other law enforcement agencies reassess their priorities, take stock of their performance, and fulfill their responsibilities. A comprehensive strategy is needed to restore law and order, curtail criminal activities, and protect the lives and property of the people. Without urgent and decisive action, the province risks further destabilization.
