Awami Tehreek called for a nationwide conference in Islamabad on January 18 to highlight the threats of additional canals on Indus and corporate farming.

Islamabad, January 12– After months of protests across Sindh, Awami Tehreek and Sindhiani Tehreek have announced a countywide conference in Islamabad on January 18 to address the alarming threats posed by corporate farming and the construction of six new canals from the Indus River.
Advocate Wasand Thari, President of AT, highlighted that plans to allocate 4.8 million acres to foreign investors will displace farmers, increase unemployment, and deepen food insecurity.
Ms. Umrah Samo, President of ST, warned that new canals will disrupt the Indus River’s flow, harm ecosystems, and marginalize local communities.Amendments to the IRSA Act by the Bilawal-Shahbaz government enabling foreign control over water resources further endanger millions of livelihoods.
The conference calls on citizens, policymakers, and activists to unite and protect Pakistan’s resources.
