January is a month for Sindh to remember its great leaders, celebrating their birthdays and death anniversaries. On the 5th of January, the birthday of Z.A. Bhutto is observed, followed by GM Syed on the 17th, Rasool Bux Palijo on the 20th, and the death anniversaries of Shaheed Fazul Rahu on the 17th and Adi Zahida Shaikh on the 6th. These dates, among many others, honor the leaders who shaped Sindh’s political, social, and literary landscape.
For the working-class people of Sindh—farmers and laborers—there are two great personalities whose struggles stand as a testament to resilience. One is the revolutionary voice of Rasool Bux Palijo, and the other is Shaheed-e-Awam Fazul Rahu. On their days, let us remember and pay tribute to their relentless fight for justice.
1. Shaheed-e-Awam Muhammad Fazul Rahu:
Fazul Rahu, born on the 17th of January 1934 in Rahuki, Badin district, is remembered as one of Sindh’s most cherished political leaders. His life represents an enduring struggle for justice, equality, and the rights of the oppressed. His sacrifices continue to inspire many, and his legacy lives on through the people’s movement, Awami Tahreek, which he played a crucial role in leading. Rahu was a fearless advocate for democracy and the welfare of the common people, and his contributions to Sindh’s political landscape are invaluable.
Early Life and Struggle
Rahu was born in a rural area of Sindh, where feudal oppression was widespread. Despite coming from a humble background, he was deeply aware of the injustices around him. His early life gave him a sense of duty to fight for his people, particularly against the exploitation they faced. His passion for justice was shaped by the harsh realities experienced by farmers, laborers, and rural communities, and it became the foundation of his political activism.
Rahu realized that change could only come through collective struggle. He worked alongside like-minded individuals, striving to uplift the marginalized and downtrodden. His political activism was centered on social justice and a vision of a society where exploitation and feudal oppression were dismantled.
Role in Awami Tahreek and Partnership with Rasool Bux Palijo
Rahu’s political journey took a significant turn when he became a leader in the Awami Tahreek, a party based on principles of social justice, democracy, and Sindh’s autonomy. His collaboration with Rasool Bux Palijo, a visionary leader, helped shape the party’s pro-people stance. Together, they advocated for a society where justice prevailed, and every individual had the opportunity to live with dignity.
Both Rahu and Palijo strongly believed in the power of the people to bring about political and social change. They understood that their fight was not just about the present but about ensuring a better future for the people of Sindh. Despite facing immense political repression and threats to their lives, they remained firm in their mission.
A Martyr for the Cause
Fazul Rahu’s life was tragically cut short when he was assassinated on January 17, 1987, in Golarchi town, by Fazil Chang. At the time of his death, Rahu was a leading figure in the Movement for the Restoration of Democracy (MRD). His death was a result of a conspiracy, as his activism against feudal landlords, capitalists, and military regimes made him a target. Rahu’s assassination did not end his mission but instead strengthened the resolve of his followers. His martyrdom deepened the commitment to his cause, particularly within Awami Tahreek, which continued the fight for justice and equality.
Rahu’s sacrifice is a powerful reminder of the high cost of standing up to tyranny. His death galvanized a new generation of activists who saw his life and sacrifice as a call to action for the oppressed.
Legacy and Influence
Today, Shaheed Fazul Rahu’s legacy is alive, carried forward by his followers and Awami Tahreek. His unwavering commitment to justice and equality has shaped Sindh’s political discourse. His ideals continue to resonate with those working to uplift marginalized communities and challenge systemic oppression. Rahu’s life teaches that change is possible when the people unite against adversity.
2. Revolutionary Voice: Rasool Bux Palijo
Rasool Bux Palijo (1930-2018) stands as one of the most influential political and intellectual figures in Sindh’s history. His life was marked by his commitment to Marxist-Leninist-Maoist ideologies, his advocacy for Sindhi autonomy, and his relentless fight for the rights of the working class. Palijo’s contributions to Sindhi nationalism and his fight against exploitation have made him a prominent figure not only in Sindh but also in global movements for the liberation of oppressed peoples.
Early Life and Education
Born on February 21, 1930, in Mungar Khan Palijo, Sindh, Palijo’s early years were shaped by the feudal system and socio-political struggles. He grew up in an environment where exploitation and oppression were prevalent, which deeply influenced his sense of justice. Though his education was interrupted by socio-economic conditions, Palijo was introduced to Marxist-Leninist-Maoist thought, which later became the foundation of his activism.
Awami Tahreek: A Movement for Proletarian Independence
In the 1970s, Rasool Bux Palijo founded the Awami Tahreek (People’s Movement) to challenge the feudal system, empower the working class, and achieve regional autonomy for Sindh. He strongly believed that Sindh’s resources and people were being exploited by both feudal landlords and national elites. Through Awami Tahreek, Palijo united the Sindhi masses under the banner of social justice and independence from oppressive forces.
Global Solidarity and Anti-Imperialism
Palijo was not only focused on regional issues but also believed in proletarian internationalism, the idea that the struggle of the working class in one part of the world is connected to the struggles of oppressed people everywhere. His commitment to global solidarity extended his work beyond Sindh to global movements against imperialism and colonialism. Palijo emphasized the importance of uniting oppressed communities worldwide to challenge capitalist and imperialist systems.
Struggle Against Feudalism, Capitalism, and Imperialism
Palijo’s activism was deeply rooted in his critique of feudalism, capitalism, and imperialism, which he saw as the forces maintaining oppression. His fight against these systems, particularly through Awami Tahreek, included protests, strikes, and campaigns aimed at dismantling the entrenched political and economic structures in Sindh. His advocacy for agrarian reform, workers’ rights, and the protection of Sindh’s natural resources resonated with the people, who saw in him a leader committed to their liberation.
Legacy and Influence
Rasool Bux Palijo’s legacy continues to inspire those working for social justice, equality, and the empowerment of marginalized communities. His contributions to Sindhi literature, his belief in proletarian independence, and his dedication to global solidarity have left a lasting impact on Sindh’s political landscape. Palijo’s vision of a just society, free from the grip of feudalism and capitalism, remains a guiding light for future generations.
