Pakistan has lost one of its most distinguished naval officers, Admiral Iftikhar Ahmed Sirohey, who passed away in Islamabad. His passing is a moment of grief for the entire nation, especially for the Pakistan Navy, where he served with unwavering dedication and excellence. Admiral Sirohey’s career was marked by remarkable leadership, strategic brilliance, and a lifelong commitment to strengthening Pakistan’s maritime defense.
Early Life and Military Training
Born in Punjab, Admiral Iftikhar Ahmed Sirohey belonged to a patriotic family with deep-rooted values of service and dedication to the nation. His early education was characterized by intelligence and discipline, which later paved the way for his illustrious military career. In 1955, he joined the Pakistan Naval Academy and was commissioned into the Pakistan Navy, embarking on a journey that would leave a lasting impact on the country’s naval defense.
Key Role in the 1965 and 1971 Wars
During the 1965 Indo-Pak War, Admiral Sirohey played a vital role in Pakistan Navy’s strategic operations. His contributions were instrumental in executing naval attacks that significantly weakened enemy forces, particularly through Karachi-based operations that inflicted heavy losses on the Indian Navy.
In the 1971 War, he once again displayed extraordinary leadership and courage. Despite the challenging circumstances on the eastern front, Admiral Sirohey ensured that Pakistan’s naval defenses remained strong. Though the war presented a difficult chapter in Pakistan’s history, his role in protecting the country’s maritime interests was commendable.
Commander of the Pakistan Navy (1986 – 1988)
In 1986, Admiral Iftikhar Ahmed Sirohey was appointed as the Chief of the Naval Staff.
