JSM Announces Protest Against Canal Projects on March 14 at Al-Manzar
Sanghar (Hasnain Ashiq Saand) The Chairman of Jeay Sindh Mahaz (JSM), Riaz Chandio, has announced that on March 14, in observance of the International Day of Action for Rivers, a strong protest will be held at Al-Manzar, Jamshoro, against the extraction of canals from the Indus River. The protest will be organized in response to the call of the “Save the River Movement.”
Addressing a press conference at Tando Adam Press Club, Riaz Chandio stated that the Indus River is the lifeline of Sindh, and no exploitation of it will be tolerated. He criticized President Asif Ali Zardari’s recent statement in the joint parliamentary session opposing the canal projects, calling it a mere drama. Chandio claimed that if Zardari genuinely opposed the canals, no construction could proceed even an inch further.
He further alleged that Zardari is responsible for the destruction of Sindh, having approved the canal projects and supported corporate farming initiatives that threaten Sindh’s resources. Chandio demanded the immediate cancellation of all canal projects on the Indus River.
He announced that on March 14 — a sacred day in the Bhil month, which coincides with the International Day of Action for Rivers and the Holi festival — JSM will stage a massive protest at Al-Manzar. He called on all conscious citizens, intellectuals, and Sindh supporters to participate actively.
Riaz Chandio emphasized that this anti-canal movement will only conclude once an official notification is issued halting all canal-related construction and repair work. He declared that this is a battle for Sindh’s survival, which must be upheld at all costs.
On the occasion, JSM’s Central Secretary for Coordination Kamal Khan Mehr, divisional leader Abrar Morai, farmer leader Nazir Shaikh, Parvez Chandio, and other notable figures were also present.
