Awami Tahreek & Sindhiyani Tahreek Honor Indus River, Protest Against Canals & Corporate Farming
Sindh, March 14: On the International Day of Action for Rivers, Awami Tahreek and Sindhiyani Tahreek honored the Indus River by showering rose petals and protesting against new canals and corporate farming under the Green Pakistan Initiative project of Federal Government. The event took place on nine major bridges on river Indus across Sindh including Gudu-Kashmore, Sukkur-Rohri, Gambat-Larkana, Moro-Dadu, Qazi Ahmed-Amri, Hyderabad-Jamshoro, Hyderabad-Kotri, Jhirk-Mula Katiyaar, and Thatta-Sujawal Bridges.
Leaders like Advocate Wasand Thari, Umrah Samo, and others led the protest, joined by women and children. Protesters condemned federal policies, warning that canal projects would divert Sindh’s water to Punjab, threatening agriculture and the environment. They rejected amendments to the IRSA Act, calling them an attack on Sindh’s water rights.
They highlighted the dangers of declining Indus water including sea intrusion, desertification and increased cyclone risks for Karachi. Protesters also criticized the government’s crackdown on dissent through laws like the 26th Amendment and PECA Act.
Chanting slogans against the Zardari-Nawaz anti-people and anti-Sindh government’s policies, they vowed to resist what they called a “corporate land grab” and pledged to observe March 14 annually as a day of resistance for the Indus River.
