Most of our population lacking access to clean drinking water unfortunately: Governor concern about fast depletion of underground water table in Balochistan; calls for multidimensional long-term strategy

QUETTA: The Governor Balochistan, Sheikh Jaffar Khan Mandokhail has expressed deep concern over the fast depletion of underground water table mainly because of the less rainfall and excessive use of the water resources for last few decades in the province.
In view of the alarming situation, the Governor underlined need to prepare multidimensional but long-term strategy in order to cope with the shortage of water.
He stressed that we have to protect our coming generations by preserving water for future.
These views were expressed by the Governor during briefing on the water related issues conducted by the Consultant of Revival of Balochistan Water Resources, Mr. Jelle Beekma, here on Saturday.
The Governor was of the strong view that the initiatives like construction of dams, storage of water, minimizing wastage of water can help increase the underground water recharge.
He regretfully pointed out that unfortunately, most of our population has no access to the clean drinking water, due to which, the women of the remote areas are to travel for several miles for water in the developed era.
The shortage of water is casting serious impacts on the agriculture, livestock and food safety, he added.
The Governor said that although the incumbent government is giving priority for provision of clean drinking water to the public, besides promoting new techniques for water preservation, but still there is a need to strengthen coordination among all concerned departments.
He also stressed that we should ponder upon the new trends of cultivation in the unique weather and tropical conditions of the province.
