Sir Syed University hosted a seminar on entrepreneurship for youth empowerment

KARACHI, April 15, 2025 – Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology (SSUET) hosted a seminar and panel discussion focused on entrepreneurship as a means for the economic empowerment of Sindh’s youth. The event was attended by Chancellor SSUET Muhammad Akbar Ali Khan, Registrar Cdre. (r) Syed Sarfraz Ali, Philippine Consul General Dr. Imran Yousuf, Deputy Director of the Youth Affairs Department for the Government of Sindh, Mr. Habib Ullah, Chairman of the Pakistan Maritime Agency Rear Admiral (r) Ateeq ur Rehman, CEO of Professionals Network Mr. Mahmood Tareen, Shahrukh Ahmed of Shehla Industries Karoobar Wala, and Chairman of the SSUET Computer Science Department Dr. Kashif Shaikh, among others.
Addressing the seminar, Chancellor Muhammad Akbar Ali Khan emphasized the vital role universities play in promoting entrepreneurship and innovation among students. He underscored that universities are not merely centers for learning but also serve as incubators for new ideas and ventures. In addition to providing theoretical knowledge, universities facilitate the development of practical skills through workshops, seminars, and experiential learning. Sir Syed University has fostered a vibrant community of students, faculty, alumni, and industry experts, creating an atmosphere ripe for valuable connections, mentorship, and collaborations that can lead to successful entrepreneurial endeavors.
Chancellor Akbar Ali Khan said that Engr. Muhammad Zakir Ali Khan, who dedicated 50 years as the honorary General Secretary of the Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys’ Association, was an ardent supporter of youth empowerment. He believed that young people have the potential to drive meaningful change in society and the world at large. We are committed to carrying forward his legacy.
Philippine Consul General, Dr. Imran Yousuf stated that while business is driven by profit, entrepreneurship begins with understanding customer needs. He emphasized the importance of being recognized by one’s work rather than by name and likened the entrepreneurial journey to a tree that grows from a seed—highlighting that the path from seed to fruit takes time. He noted that leadership involves making others’ lives more comfortable and emphasized the necessity of product guarantees as a measure of credibility.
Chairmain Maritime Agency, Rear Admiral (r) Ateeq ur Rehman encouraged participants to overcome the fear of failure, asserting that confidence is crucial for entrepreneurs. He highlighted the maritime sector’s significant economic potential, noting a need for engineers and the necessity of internships to translate theoretical knowledge into practical experience. He also remarked on the advantage of having the world’s largest coastline.
CEO Professionals Network, Mahmood Tareen acknowledged that job opportunities in Pakistan are limited, with new industries not emerging and existing ones becoming saturated. He claimed that entrepreneurship is essential, stating that failure should be viewed as an opportunity for reinvention.
Shahrukh of Shelah Industries pointed out the saturation of the job market in Pakistan and stressed the importance of acquiring specific skills for freelancing success. He advocated for the creation of incubation centers and networking opportunities to support aspiring entrepreneurs.
Dy. Director Yout Affairs, Government of Sindh, Syed Habib Ullah remarked that problems and opportunities are intertwined, emphasizing the importance of identifying opportunities and the ongoing need for youth engagement.
Chairman Computer Science Department, Dr. Kashif Shaikh stressed the necessity of strong skills for achieving business success, along with a passion for one’s work.
