Awami Tehreek Extends Full Support to Sindh’s Brave Advocates in Historic Struggle for Sindh
Hyderabad: 17 April: Awami Tehreek fully supports and stands shoulder to shoulder with the courageous advocates of Sindh who have taken to the streets in a principled and determined struggle to safeguard the rights of Sindh and its people. This movement is not an ordinary protest — it is a historic moment of resistance against systemic exploitation, institutional injustice, and the ongoing encroachments on Sindh’s political, economic, and constitutional space. The lawyers of Sindh, through their sit-ins and road blockades, have become the voice of a silenced people and a barricade against the onslaught of anti-Sindh policies being imposed in the name of development, security, and national interest.
The advocates’ agitation directly challenges a series of state-backed assaults on Sindh. We vehemently oppose the imposition of corporate farming schemes that aim to hand over Sindh’s fertile lands to profit-driven entities, backed by undemocratic institutions, thereby displacing indigenous communities and undermining the agrarian foundation of Sindh’s economy. The construction of six canals on the River Indus without Sindh’s consent is a criminal act of water theft — a violation of the Indus Water Accord, a threat to the ecology of the province, and a grave injustice to millions whose lives depend on the Indus. The amendments to IRSA (Indus River System Authority) further institutionalize this injustice by legalizing the majority’s tyranny over Sindh’s lifeline — the Indus River — and denying Sindh its constitutional right to equitable water distribution.
Simultaneously, we reject the PECA ordinance, which is being used to silence dissent, crush digital freedom, and stifle voices that speak out against state oppression and economic injustice. Such legislation has no place in a democratic society and reflects an alarming drift toward authoritarianism. Equally alarming is the formation of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), which undermines the federal structure of the constitution by centralizing economic decisions in the hands of unelected and unaccountable entities, depriving Sindh and other provinces of their rightful autonomy in managing natural resources, investments, and land.
Moreover, the unequal composition of the Council of Common Interests (CCI) is a glaring symbol of center-province imbalance, where decisions affecting millions in Sindh are being taken without fair representation or consultation. This marginalization of Sindh in national policymaking bodies is unacceptable and unconstitutional. The demands of the protesting lawyers are, in fact, the collective demands of the people of Sindh — for justice, equity, and the restoration of democratic norms.
Awami Tehreek salutes the courage, clarity, and commitment of Sindh’s young lawyers. Their movement is a moral call to action for every political, democratic, nationalist, and progressive force across Pakistan. It is now a national responsibility to support this movement and resist the theft of Sindh’s resources, the distortion of its rights, and the suppression of its voice. The coming days will be decisive in shaping the future of Sindh — and we pray that this movement brings not another chapter of glorious defeat, but a dawn of victorious resistance.
We call upon the people of Sindh, civil society, labor unions, farmers’ associations, students, and all pro-people forces to join hands in this critical struggle. Let us rise to defend our land, our water, our constitution, and our future.
Long live the struggle of Sindh’s people. Long live Sindh’s brave lawyers. Long live resistance.
