Karachi Mayor Unveils Empress Market Parking Facility to Ease Traffic Woes
KARACHI, Apr 20 (PPI): In a bid to tackle Karachi’s persistent traffic issues, Mayor Murtaza Wahab has inaugurated a new parking facility at Empress Market, offering space for 600 vehicles in Saddar. This development, part of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s initiative, aims to alleviate parking congestion in the city center, with plans to extend similar projects to Boulton Market.
During the inauguration, the mayor highlighted the project’s significance in resolving parking problems that have long troubled visitors, residents, and shopkeepers in Saddar. “We have made a commitment to address these pressing issues,” he remarked, emphasizing the need for citizens’ cooperation to prevent road parking and reduce traffic jams.
Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad and other city officials were present at the event. The mayor signaled readiness to assume control over the existing Saddar parking plaza from the Karachi Development Authority, underscoring the importance of this practical step in easing traffic pressure.
The mayor also outlined future phases for Empress Market, including enhancements for meat vendors and the vegetable section. Additionally, he reiterated his commitment to fulfilling promises made by Bilawal Bhutto and the Sindh Chief Minister, urging public cooperation in ongoing development projects.
Addressing broader city issues, Mayor Wahab criticized the handling of the canal water distribution by Punjab ministers and called for federal intervention. He also discussed plans for city development, including a letter to the Prime Minister for a Karachi development package and proposals to repurpose railway spaces for parking.
Looking ahead, the mayor announced upcoming project milestones, with the Boulton Market parking space set to open by June 30, and other infrastructure developments such as the Mina Bazaar underpass and Denso Hall slated for completion by late August and April 30, respectively.
