Sukkur/Khairpur/Babarloi (Press Release) The sit-in protest against canals and corporate farming in Babarloi continues with unwavering passion and determination on its tenth day. A large number of activists from Awami Tahreek and Sindhyani Tahreek, led by its key leadership including Awami Tahreek’s Central Senior Vice President Noor Ahmed Katiar, Advocate Sarwan Jatoi, Sindhi Shagird Tahreek’s Central President Advocate Naveed Abbas Kalhoro, Sindhyani Tahreek’s Sukkur District President Shamsad Bapar, Shamim Bhatti, and Robina Bhatti, remain present at the protest. The Sindhi Shagird Tahreek organized a rally from Main Chowk Babarloi to the Highway, which later joined the lawyers’ sit-in.
Addressing the protest, Awami Tahreek’s Central Senior Vice President Noor Ahmed Katiar stated, No matter how many conspiracies or deceptions the Peoples Party (PPP) employs, the Sindhi nation will continue its peaceful democratic struggle, thwarting all government plots. He emphasized that the police violence and firing in Kandhkot expose the PPP’s agenda to turn Sindh’s peaceful democratic resistance into a violent conflict, aiming to trigger civil war in the country. He warned that any attempt to crush the peaceful sit-in through force would have dire consequences, declaring, “This sit-in no longer belongs only to lawyers but to every citizen of Sindh.”
Katiar accused the PPP of resorting to “Zia-like tyranny” after failing to suppress the movement through conspirous tactics. He urged the PPP to learn from history, reminding them that the Sindhi people have never tolerated autocrats like Zia-ul-Haq. He condemned the “anti-democracy, anti-people policies” of the Bhutto-Sharif-led government and vowed intensified resistance.
Katiar further criticized the SIFC (Special Investment Facilitation Council), calling it a “corporate-controlled regime” operating above the Constitution and law to auction off Sindh’s lands and resources. He demanded the immediate cancellation of the six new canal projects and corporate farming land allotments, urging the Sindh government to reclaim these lands and redistribute them to local landless peasants and laborers.
Sindhi Shagird Tahreek’s Central President Advocate Naveed Abbas Kalhoro declared, every child of Sindh is on the frontlines of this struggle against canals and corporate farming. He called on the PPP to abandon violence against Sindhis and instead terminate the canal and corporate farming projects. He specifically demanded the revocation of land allotments to Green Corporate Initiative Private Limited, a company that encroaching on Sindh’s lands.
