TUJ(Workers) Organized Rally to Mark World Press Freedom Day
Sanghar (Hasnain Ashiq Saand) On the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, the Tando Adam Union of Journalists Workers organized a rally from the Union Office to Muhammadi Chowk to raise awareness about freedom of expression, the protection of journalists, and the importance of independent journalism.
The rally saw participation from a large number of journalists, political and social activists, members of civil society, literary figures, and local residents. Participants carried placards and chanted slogans in support of press freedom and democratic rights.
Addressing the rally, acting president of PFUJ Workers Tando Adam, Khalid Hussain Khaskheli, senior journalist Riaz Hussain Sanjrani, Chairman of Sindh Paak Tahreek Shahjahan Junejo, Secretary of Sindhi Adabi Sangat Tando Adam Mohammad Akhlaq Waryah, Sagar Dahraj, Gul Hassan Lakho, Allahdad Mari and Ghulam Shabir Korejo of JSQM and Zubair Makorani of the Qaumi Awami Tehreek emphasized that journalism is not just about reporting news but is a vital public service that promotes awareness and social responsibility.
Speakers condemned the increasing threats faced by journalists in Sindh, referring to the sacrifices made by martyred journalists including Nasrullah Gadani, Aziz Memon, AD Sher, and Jan Mohammad Mahar. They also criticized the enforcement of the PECA Act, calling it a draconian and authoritarian move to suppress freedom of speech.
They urged the government to introduce effective policies for the welfare and safety of journalists and reaffirmed that civil society stands with the media in their struggle for truth and justice. They noted that journalists serve as a bridge to highlight the voice of the oppressed against powerful forces.
Prominent journalists Wahid Bux Channa, Mashooq Sand, Abdul Razzaq Solangi, Ramzan Shaikh, Azad Anwar, Kashif Panhwar, Anwar Rathore, and Ehsan Shah were also present at the rally. On the occasion, folk artist Faheem Khaskheli performed a poetic tribute that received great appreciation from the crowd.
