Liaquat Lehri emphasizes need for joint efforts by all institutions to address traffic issues in Quetta
QUETTA: The Parliamentary Secretary for Transport, Mir Liaquat Lehri has emphasized the need for joint efforts by all institutions to address the traffic issues in Quetta city.
He said that no form of negligence or carelessness will be tolerated in this regard. To maintain smooth traffic flow in Quetta, it is essential to complete ongoing road development projects on time and according to standards.
He stated that a proposal will be presented to the Chief Minister for appointing four Project Directors (PDs) for the Quetta Development Package so that the ongoing development projects under the Quetta Package can be completed timely.
He made these remarks while addressing the first meeting of the Transport Operation Committee here on Tuesday.
The meeting was attended by Transport Secretary Hayat Kakar, C&W Secretary Lal Jan Jafar, Director General of the Traffic Engineering Bureau Dr. Sajjad, SSP Traffic Shehzada Umar Abbas, RTA Secretary Muhammad Ali Durrani, Director Finance Dr. Shahid, Deputy Director Quetta Development Package Muhammad Sabir, Director QDA Abdul Ghafoor, Director Traffic Engineering Bureau Shakeel Ahmed, Deputy Secretary Transport Abdul Rahim, and others.
Dr. Sajjad, DG of the Traffic Engineering Bureau, gave a detailed briefing to the participants and informed them about the proposed development projects in Quetta. He also presented suggestions for solving the city’s traffic problems.
During the meeting, it was decided to include the Secretary of Urban Planning and the Secretary of C&W as members of the Transport Operation Committee. The participants agreed with the C&W Secretary’s proposal regarding the Double Road and Circular Road project from GPO Chowk to Pishin Stop and approved its inclusion in the ongoing development work of the Traffic Engineering Bureau.
The participants also agreed with the proposal by the DG Traffic Engineering Bureau and decided to request the Serena Hotel management to conduct vehicle security checks within hotel premises so that traffic flow on Zarghoon Road is not affected.
The participants endorsed the no-parking and one-way decisions previously made by the Commissioner and Administrator of Quetta Division. The DG Traffic Engineering Bureau suggested establishing temporary parking stations at various locations to address the parking problems, a proposal that was appreciated and directed to be forwarded to the Traffic Police and Quetta Commissioner.
The Chairman of the Committee proposed that the Traffic Engineering Bureau and the Chief Minister’s Quetta City Package team jointly assess the feasibility of constructing underpasses at Magsi Chowk and Munir Ahmed Chowk on Sariab Road.
Parliamentary Secretary and Committee Chairman Mir Liaquat Lehri appreciated the steps taken by the DG Traffic Engineering Bureau to improve traffic in the city and expressed hope that the Transport Department, Traffic Police, Quetta Commissioner, and other relevant departments will work together to resolve Quetta’s traffic issues.
Mir Liaquat Lehri also said that traffic signals at various intersections in Quetta will be activated to maintain traffic flow, and road construction projects will be completed timely and with quality to reduce public inconvenience. He added that Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti is taking special interest in beautifying Quetta and resolving traffic issues, and that efforts should align with his vision.
