KARACHI: In a brazen act of intimidation, the home of senior High Court lawyer Qazi Riaz Hussain Qureshi was allegedly raided by a notorious land grabber accompanied by Korangi police personnel, resulting in harassment of his family, vandalism, and threats.
According to details, the incident occurred in the absence of senior High Court lawyer Qazi Riaz Hussain Qureshi. The notorious builder and land grabber, along with the police, reportedly harassed the family, began demolishing parts of the house, and attempted to take over the property. This incident is said to be part of a broader pattern in which powerful figures or police officials help seize dozens of properties in the same cooperative housing society.
These seized properties in portions are then used for illegal constructions, which are later sold.
Residents of Lucknow Cooperative Housing Society told journalists that the individual in question, identified as Ma’roof Khan, is not even a resident of the society. They alleged that he has illegally built and sold multi-story portions—three to four floors high—on more than a dozen houses. They also claim that this ongoing land grabbing is carried out with the backing of influential figures, including MPAs, ministers, and police officials.
On the day of the incident, the lawyer’s family—particularly the women and children—were allegedly harassed, and parts of their house, including walls and stairways, were damaged and blocked.
This incident highlights the alarming vulnerability of citizens, including senior legal professionals in their absence, to land grabbing mafias allegedly operating with state protection. The involvement of police personnel in the raid raises serious concerns about the abuse of power and the erosion of rule of law in Karachi’s property sector.
The attack on a lawyer’s home and family has sent shockwaves through the legal community and civil society, prompting demands for a swift, transparent investigation and accountability for all those involved, including any complicit police authorities.
The incident underscores the urgent need to dismantle networks of illegal land occupation operating under political and institutional patronage.
Journalists tried to contact Ma’roof Khan for his version but calls were unanswered, while the Korangi Police Station officials involved were also not immediately named or available for comment on the occasion.
