A state of emergency has been declared in Gilgit-Baltistan as flash floods, triggered by rapid glacier melting, have displaced thousands of people in the remote valleys. The region is facing significant challenges, with homes, crops, and vital infrastructure damaged or destroyed.The Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan has extended an invitation to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to visit the affected areas and provide support to the victims.
The provincial government has dispatched rescue teams to the affected areas, including the valley of Bgrot, where a glacier burst incident occurred, sweeping a father-son duo into a deep gorge. An 11-day-long search operation is underway to locate missing tourists on the Babusar Road.
The region is at risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF) due to rising temperatures and melting glaciers, which can lead to flash flooding, landslides, and further devastation. Thousands of people have been displaced, and homes, crops, and infrastructure have been damaged or destroyed, highlighting the need for sustained relief efforts . The provincial government has assured its commitment to supporting the flood victims and providing them with necessary assistance.
