Islamabad, August 19, 2025  Pakistan has expressed concern over the fragile political and security situation in South Sudan, warning that escalating conflict could jeopardize the progress made under the 2018 peace agreement.

Addressing the UN Security Council meeting on South Sudan, Pakistan’s Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said that the detention of political leaders undermines trust and inclusivity, essential for sustainable peace. Supporting the African Union, Pakistan called for the immediate release of all detained political prisoners.

Ambassador Ahmad acknowledged that plans for the 2026 elections offer prospects for democratic progress. However, he stressed that alongside insufficient global financial, technical and political assistance, a credible and secure environment for fair and transparent elections is crucial.

The Ambassador described the humanitarian crisis in South Sudan as dire, citing the consequences of armed conflict, climate change impacts, cholera outbreaks and regional displacement. These factors have severely impacted countless individuals, with over 1.4 million facing flood risks, necessitating urgent global assistance.

Ambassador Ahmad expressed satisfaction with Pakistan’s significant contribution to the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), where Pakistan is a leading troop contributor. Pakistani peacekeepers have constructed over 80 kilometers of flood defenses, secured aid routes, protected UN facilities, and safeguarded civilians. He strongly condemned attacks on peacekeepers and aid workers, terming them war crimes.

He insisted that UNMISS needs sufficient resources, appropriate equipment and political support. Addressing issues of staff shortages, deployment delays and logistical obstacles are essential, as is respecting the Status of Forces Agreement.

Ambassador Ahmad concluded that South Sudan’s path is challenging but achievable. Genuine political will, national ownership of an inclusive peace process, and sustained international cooperation can transform the prospect of peace, stability and prosperity into reality.
