ISLAMABAD, Sept 13 : China has extended its support to Pakistan in the wake of devastating monsoon floods that have claimed nearly 1,000 lives across the country.
Beijing’s top diplomat in Islamabad, Chargé d’Affaires Shi Yuanqiang, conveyed China’s condolences and solidarity, stating: “China stands with Pakistan in mitigating the impacts of floods and enhancing resilience to climate challenges.” His remarks were carried by Gwadar Pro on Saturday.
According to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), torrential rains, cloudbursts, and flash floods since June 26 have killed at least 956 people and left more than 1,060 injured. The calamity has affected over 5.8 million people nationwide, including 4.2 million in Punjab. Nearly 2.4 million individuals have been evacuated, with around 94,000 seeking refuge in 1,630 relief camps.
The floods have also destroyed 2,216 homes and damaged a total of 8,481, while over 6,500 livestock have perished.
On Friday, Shi led a delegation from the Chinese Embassy to the National Emergencies Operations Center at NDMA headquarters. NDMA Chairman Lt. Gen. Inam Haider Malik briefed the delegation on ongoing relief and response efforts, including coordination with provincial governments, evacuations under the Prime Minister’s Relief Assistance Programme, and the deployment of disaster early warning systems.
Officials further highlighted NDMA’s risk communication measures, anticipatory actions, and simulation exercises aimed at strengthening Pakistan’s disaster preparedness in line with global best practices.
