Lahore, September 26, 2025…A delegation led by the President of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan, Professor Khalid Masood Gondal, called on Governor Punjab Sardar Saleem Haider Khan at the Governor House Lahore. The meeting was attended by elected council members from all four provinces. The Governor of Punjab also congratulated the elected council members. The delegation included Dr. Asad Rahim, Regional Director of CPSP Regional Center Birmingham, who came from England, and Dr. Javed Kiani, who accompanied him.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor Punjab Sardar Saleem Haider Khan said that the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan is the largest institution of higher medical education in the country. He appreciated the services rendered by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan at the national and international levels. The Governor of Punjab said that during the recent floods in the country, the doctors also provided full support to the flood victims, which is commendable. He said that I am happy to know that this institution is providing quality services without any financial assistance from the government. The Governor of Punjab said that along with tertiary care centers, specialist doctors should be provided at the district level so that the people can get medical facilities at their doorsteps. He said that millions of people were affected by the heavy rains and floods across the country. The Governor of Punjab said that even at this time, thousands of victims are waiting for our help and rehabilitation under the open sky. He said that we all need to play a role together in helping and rehabilitating the flood victims.
The Governor of Punjab further said that the Pakistan Peoples Party has always taken revolutionary steps for the welfare of the people. He said that the beginning of the rights of Balochistan was started by the Pakistan Peoples Party. The Governor of Punjab said that the gas emanating from the Sui location in Balochistan was provided to Sui and its adjacent areas by the PPP in 2008.
On this occasion, the college delegation briefed the Governor and said that this institution has included more than 50,000 specialists and more than 40,000 trainees in the structured training process without taking financial assistance from the provincial and federal governments. The number of accredited medical institutions is more than 453, of which 358 are in Pakistan and 95 are abroad. More than 6,612 supervisors are providing training in these institutions, including about 273 overseas supervisors. The delegation said that at present, the college is providing 85 specialist doctors in the public sector, the same ratio is also in the private sector, while this number is about 100 in the armed forces. The college is currently supervising 89 fellowship programs, which is the largest number in the world and is comparable to the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. He said that the services of the institution are also ongoing abroad and its centers are located in Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Ireland and the UK. The delegation said that 745 residents are currently benefiting from the Overseas Scholarship Program in Ireland, which started in 2013. 740 postgraduate residents have been facilitated under the MoU signed in the UK in 2017. Institutions like Birmingham University Hospital, Walsall NHS Trust, Ladies Teaching Hospital, Hull and Yorkshire and Dudley Group of Hospitals are accredited with CPSP. He said that all trainees work for two years and are required to return and serve the country under the college’s scheme. That is why the World Health Organization (WHO) has named this program Brain Gain and not Brain Drain. The delegation further said that during the recent visit of the CPSP delegation to England and Ireland, the delegation also met the Lord Mayor of Birmingham and the Lord Mayor of Dublin. He said that the Irish government thanked the CPSP and the Government of Pakistan.
