Pakistan, China to Expand Cooperation in New Sectors under CPEC Phase II: Ahsan Iqbal

Federal Minister for Planning and Development, Professor Ahsan Iqbal, held a meeting with the Governor of Hunan Province, Mr. Mao Weiming, to discuss strengthening Pakistan–China cooperation and expanding partnerships under CPEC Phase II into new areas of development.

During the meeting, the Minister highlighted the successful participation of leaders from more than twenty countries in the BeiDou Summit, terming it “highly encouraging.” He appreciated Hunan’s central role in China’s economy and noted that the BeiDou system provides advanced information infrastructure crucial for industrial growth.

Professor Ahsan Iqbal recalled that Pakistan was the first foreign country to adopt BeiDou, which he said reflects the deep trust and enduring friendship between Pakistan and China. He emphasized that bilateral cooperation is now reaching new heights in science, technology, economic development, space, and advanced technologies.

He further remarked that CPEC is the flagship project of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) which enabled Pakistan to overcome its energy and infrastructure bottlenecks. He explained that while CPEC Phase I focused on physical infrastructure and energy projects, Phase II prioritizes industrialization, modern agriculture, minerals, science & technology, and people-to-people exchanges.

The Minister stressed that cooperation with Hunan Province would be expanded in key sectors including modern agriculture, technology, minerals, and railways, adding that Hunan can play a central role in advancing CPEC Phase II.

On the occasion, Governor Mao Weiming thanked the Federal Minister for participating in the Summit, saying that his presence in Hunan reflects the strength of Pakistan–China friendship. The Governor also approved the establishment of a permanent working group with Hunan Province to accelerate implementation of CPEC Phase II projects.
