Khyber (Aman Ali Shinwari) – The District Press Club Khyber, Landi Kotal, held a special meeting on the occasion of World News Day, chaired by Aman Ali Shinwari. Senior journalists attended the session, where they discussed obstacles in journalism, media censorship, and the growing challenges faced by reporters in tribal districts.

Speaking at the event, Aman Ali Shinwari said that producing and publishing news in tribal areas is no less than a major struggle, as local traditions and social pressures often act as barriers. He stressed that sometimes journalists themselves become the “news” while performing their duties.

He lamented that despite repeated demands, the government has failed to construct a proper press club building in Landi Kotal. As a result, local journalists are forced to work from rented premises, bearing heavy financial burdens without any support. He added that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has yet to release any funds or allowances for journalists in the region.

Highlighting institutional shortcomings, Shinwari said that instead of supporting journalists, certain organizations exploit them and create hurdles in providing accurate and timely information. He pointed out that most tribal journalists, driven by patriotism and dedication, continue their professional responsibilities without any remuneration.

Shinwari also emphasized the importance of media literacy, noting that social media has blurred the line between professional and non-professional reporting. “Holding a microphone does not make one a journalist,” he remarked, adding that professional reporters carefully choose words and consider the sensitivity of news to prevent negative impacts on society.

Concluding his remarks, he urged the government and relevant authorities to ensure the provision of accurate information to local journalists, respect their dignity, and resolve long-standing issues faced by the press community in tribal areas.
