We have noted with grave concern the delusional, provocative and jingoistic statements emanating from the highest levels of the Indian security establishment. Such irresponsible rhetoric appears aimed at fabricating arbitrary pretexts for aggression — a prospect that could have serious consequences for peace and stability in South Asia.

For decades, India has sought to portray itself as the victim while seeking to malign Pakistan internationally and foment instability in the region. That narrative has been increasingly discredited; global opinion is now more attuned to India’s role in cross-border destabilisation and regional insecurity.

Earlier this year, Indian aggression brought two nuclear-armed neighbours perilously close to a major confrontation. It would appear those events — including the loss of Indian aircraft and the demonstrated reach of Pakistan’s long-range deterrent — have not deterred those still itching for further confrontation.

In view of recent highly provocative statements by India’s defence leadership, we issue this solemn caution: any fresh round of hostilities would carry the risk of catastrophic consequences. Should hostilities be initiated, Pakistan will respond firmly and decisively. We shall not be constrained by qualms or restraint when protecting our national sovereignty and security.

Those who advocate a “new normal” based on coercion should understand that Pakistan has established its own new normal of response — rapid, decisive and destructive when required. Faced with unwarranted threats and reckless aggression, the people and armed forces of Pakistan possess both the capability and resolve to take the fight to every corner of the enemy’s territory. We will not allow the myth of geographic immunity to persist.

Finally, any talk of erasing Pakistan from the map is both reckless and delusional. Should such a calamity be contemplated, let it be known that any erasure would be mutual — a price no one in the region can afford.
