Pakistan has always shared close and friendly ties with Türkiye, built on deep historical, cultural, and religious connections. This friendship was clearly visible during the failed coup attempt in Türkiye on 15 July 2016, when the Fethullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) tried to overthrow the Turkish government.
As the people of Türkiye stood firm to protect their democracy, Pakistan quickly expressed full support for the Turkish leadership and democratic institutions. Both Houses of Pakistan’s Parliament passed unanimous resolutions condemning the coup attempt. These were the only resolutions of their kind in the world, showing Pakistan’s unique solidarity with Türkiye at a difficult time.
Pakistan did not stop at symbolic gestures. In December 2018, the Supreme Court of Pakistan officially declared FETO a terrorist organization, echoing Türkiye’s stance. The court also ordered that all FETO-linked Pak-Turk schools in the country be transferred to the Turkish Maarif Foundation, which operates educational institutions worldwide under the supervision of the Turkish government.
To further strengthen this cooperation, in January 2021, Pakistan signed an agreement with the Turkish Maarif Foundation. This accord granted the Foundation legal status, along with certain privileges and immunities, allowing it to run its schools across Pakistan smoothly.
These actions show Pakistan’s deep respect for Türkiye’s sovereignty and security concerns. They also highlight how both nations stand together in times of crisis, supporting each other not only politically but also in education and social development.
Pakistan’s response to the 2016 coup attempt reflects the trust, friendship, and shared values that have long defined Pakistan–Türkiye relations. Over the years, this partnership has continued to grow stronger—built on mutual respect, common goals, and a shared commitment to democracy and stability. Today, Pakistan and Türkiye stand side by side as brotherly nations, cooperating closely in areas such as trade, defense, education, and culture. The people of both countries share a deep affection for one another, often referring to their relationship as one of “two nations, one soul.” This unbreakable bond continues to inspire new generations, ensuring that the friendship between Pakistan and Türkiye remains as strong and enduring as ever.
