Peshawar: Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Muhammad Sohail Afridi, has ordered the immediate preparation of a comprehensive plan to expand the cultivable command area across the province, emphasizing that increasing arable land is essential for ensuring food security. Speaking at an irrigation department meeting, the CM stressed that food security remains the provincial government’s top priority and urged relevant departments to devise innovative, “out-of-the-box” solutions.
Sohail Afridi also directed the introduction of a modern asset management system for irrigation infrastructure. He ordered GIS mapping of the canal system and the preparation of complete digital records. The CM emphasized digitization of all department operations, including the collection of water charges, noting that it would enhance transparency and efficiency.
A detailed briefing was presented on development projects, laws, infrastructure, and the budget. The CM instructed officials to ensure timely completion of under-construction small dams and accelerate initiatives for tourism facilities near dams. Additional directives included creating coordinates and video documentation for canal cleaning and maintenance, filling vacant positions in the irrigation department, and eliminating the existing “on-pay scale” culture. Provincial Minister for Irrigation, Riaz Khan, and other officials attended the meeting.
