PM Shehbaz Sharif Meets UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Reaffirms Pakistan’s Role for Global Peace and Security
New York, September 27, 2025 – Prime Minister of Pakistan, Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif, reaffirmed Pakistan’s strong commitment to multilateralism and the central role of the United Nations during a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 80th UN General Assembly session.
The Prime Minister emphasized that Pakistan, as a member of the UN Security Council, will continue to play a constructive role in promoting regional and global peace and security.
Highlighting Pakistan’s key concerns, PM Shehbaz:
Called for a fair and peaceful settlement of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in line with UN Security Council resolutions.
Expressed concern over India’s violations of the Indus Waters Treaty and external-sponsored terrorism inside Pakistan.
Drew attention to the devastating impacts of climate change and recent floods in Pakistan, urging the international community to mobilize more climate finance for vulnerable countries.
Voiced deep concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, calling for an immediate ceasefire, unhindered humanitarian aid, and a credible political process for the establishment of a Palestinian state.
The Prime Minister appreciated the UN Secretary-General’s leadership in addressing pressing global issues and thanked him for his solidarity during Pakistan’s flood relief operations.
Secretary-General António Guterres commended Pakistan’s principled positions, particularly at the UN Security Council, and acknowledged Islamabad’s constructive contributions to peace, stability, and multilateral cooperation.
Both leaders agreed on the urgent need to strengthen the UN’s role in fostering peace, development, and cooperation worldwide.
