Quetta, Oct 1, –
Balochistan Assembly Speaker Captain (R) Abdul Khaliq Khan Achakzai summoned the Superintendent of Police (SP) Sariab to his chamber today, directing him to brief the Speaker and members of the committee on a pressing public grievance.
During the committee session, MPA and Parliamentary Secretary Abdul Majeed Badini drew attention to the plight of the Bagri tribe, who migrate seasonally to Quetta for labor and reside in the Sariab area. He explained that their primary livelihood depends on cultivating and selling melons and watermelons in Usta Muhammad, Jaffarabad, and Jacobabad.
The MPA informed the committee that the tribe had recently purchased melon and watermelon seeds worth nearly Rs. 1.9 million. However, in an unexpected police raid, Sariab police confiscated the seeds, alleging they could be used to manufacture explosives. This action left the community in distress, jeopardizing their only source of livelihood.
Committee members expressed grave concern and demanded immediate restitution of the seized seeds while ensuring protection for the affected community.
Speaker Achakzai directed that the Bagri tribe be provided with full security and that the confiscated amount be returned without delay. He further instructed the SSP to guarantee equal protection for every citizen, emphasizing that no community should be marginalized based on social background.
The meeting was attended by Speaker Abdul Khaliq Khan Achakzai, Abdul Majeed Badini, Ali Madad Jatak, Khair Jan Baloch, and Mir Zabad Ali Reki. Members unanimously stressed that timely intervention by the Assembly on public grievances is a commendable step, ensuring immediate relief for affected citizens.
