Peshawar: KP Governor Thanks Balochistan Assembly for Resolution on Renaming Islamabad Airport

By M.Ilyas Mullakhel

Peshawar – Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Faisal Karim Kundi, has expressed his gratitude to the Chief Minister of Balochistan and members of the Balochistan Assembly for unanimously passing a resolution to rename Islamabad International Airport as Shaheed Benazir Bhutto International Airport.

In an official statement, Governor Kundi recalled that in 2008, Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani had announced the naming of the Islamabad airport after Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto in recognition of her invaluable services to the nation. However, this name was later changed, which he termed as an injustice.

He emphasized that following the Sindh Assembly, the Balochistan Assembly’s unanimous approval of the resolution reflects the national sentiment. He urged the federal government to implement the decision accordingly.

It is worth noting that on February 20, 2025, Governor Kundi had formally written to the President and Prime Minister of Pakistan, urging them to restore the airport’s name in honor of Benazir Bhutto. Additionally, during a recent meeting with Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti, Governor Kundi discussed the possibility of passing a resolution in the provincial assembly in support of this cause.

The Governor commended the Balochistan Assembly for its unanimous decision on May 26 and extended his appreciation to Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti, Provincial Minister Bakht Muhammad Kakar, who tabled the resolution Member of Provincial Assembly Ali Madad Jatak, and all other lawmakers for their support.

Governor Kundi reiterated that this resolution is a significant step toward honoring the legacy of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto and called on the federal authorities to respect and act upon the collective voice of the provinces.
