Gilgit: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has launched a solar panel scheme for Gilgit-Baltistan, aiming to address the region’s chronic electricity shortage through clean and sustainable energy solutions.
Due to its rugged terrain, harsh climate, and lack of access to the national grid, Gilgit-Baltistan has long faced severe power challenges. Under the new initiative, solar energy systems will be provided to households and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to ensure reliable electricity supply.
The scheme will deliver solar panels with a total capacity of 58.8 megawatts, with 147,873 eligible beneficiaries set to receive panels free of cost after verification. Beneficiaries will, however, arrange batteries and inverters themselves and bear transportation costs.
Applications will be accepted through an online government portal as well as district administration offices. Officials said the selection process will include technical evaluation and district-level scrutiny to ensure transparency and merit.
The prime minister emphasized that renewable energy is vital for Pakistan’s future, particularly for remote regions like Gilgit-Baltistan, highlighting the government’s commitment to sustainable development and improved quality of life.
