QUETTA: The Chief Minister, Mir Sarfraz Bugti has stated that the Kachhi Canal project is backbone of the province’s economy and, upon completion of its phases, would irrigate millions of acres of land. He emphasized that the Balochistan government wants all outstanding issues to be resolved through mutual consultation and consensus to ensure that no stakeholder has any reservations.

He expressed these views while addressing a high-level meeting chaired by Federal Minister for Water Resources, Muhammad Moin Wattoo, in Islamabad on Tuesday.

The Chief Minister Bugti joined the meeting via video link from Quetta. The meeting was attended by senior leadership and technical experts from Balochistan and Sindh, including Chief Minister of Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah, who also participated via video link.

Other participants included Balochistan’s Minister for Irrigation Mir Sadiq Umrani, Sindh’s Minister for Irrigation Jam Shoro, as well as relevant federal and provincial officials.

The meeting conducted a detailed review of the potential impact of hill torrents and environmental factors related to Phases 2 and 3 of the Kachhi Canal project.

During the session, CM Bugti proposed the formation of a technical committee comprising experts to address the unresolved technical matters. The proposal was unanimously approved by all participants. A joint technical working group—consisting of experts from Balochistan, Sindh, and the federal government—was formally established. This committee is tasked with submitting a comprehensive technical report and practical recommendations within three weeks, aiming to make the project flood-resilient and viable.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Bugti stressed the need to find a sustainable and practical solution under expert guidance that benefits Balochistan without causing harm or flood risks to Sindh or any other region. He reaffirmed the commitment of the Balochistan government to work jointly with the federal and Sindh governments to ensure the successful execution of the Kachhi Canal project, paving the way for an agricultural revolution in the region.
