This follows the tragic collapse of a dilapidated building in Karachi’s Lyari neighborhood, which has led to increased scrutiny of building safety.

The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) in Mirpurkhas has intensified its efforts to address this issue. Deputy Director Chetan Lakhani stated that discussions have taken place with Deputy Commissioner Rashid Masood Khan and other officials to assess the situation. Lakhani revealed that 13 years ago, evacuation notices were issued for several structures, including the Osmania Hotel, Bajwa Building, Gurdwara Building, and a building in Sonar Gali. However, the property owners disregarded these notices.

The recent survey added six more buildings to the list of dangerous structures, bringing the total to 13. Lakhani clarified that the SBCA’s jurisdiction is limited to issuing notices and identifying at-risk buildings. The responsibility for enforcement lies with local authorities and law enforcement agencies. A committee has been formed to conduct surveys, and a special team from the SBCA’s Karachi office will soon visit Mirpurkhas for further assessment. Lakhani confirmed ongoing communication with the Deputy Commissioner of Mirpurkhas. Notably, the Mirpurkhas SBCA has been operating without a permanent director for several years, with the deputy director in charge
