Karachi, August 4, 2025: A grand celebration of Karachi’s history took place at the Arts Council of Karachi for the launch of Iqbal A. Rahman Mandviwalla’s book “Mere Zamane Ki Karachi” (Karachi of My Time). The event, held in Auditorium II, was presided over by Dr. Farhat Azeem. It commenced with religious proceedings, followed by prominent personalities like Salman Siddiqui, Dr. Iqbal Hashmi, Shah Waliullah Janidi, Obaidullah Qehar, Shabbir Zaidi, and Gul Bano sharing their thoughts on the book.
Dr. Azeem lauded the large turnout, stating it reflected Iqbal A. Rahman’s influence as a renowned intellectual. She described the event as a platform for intellectual discourse rather than a typical literary event. She emphasized the importance of literature and the region in preserving national identity, highlighting Karachi’s significance as a vibrant hub.
Dr. Hashmi praised Rahman’s meticulous research, noting he personally visited the places described in his work. He emphasized the need for in-depth discussions on the subject, positioning the book as a foundation for such dialogues. Janidi observed that Rahman’s two books on Karachi solidified his scholarly reputation, showcasing his deep affection for the metropolis.
Qehar lauded the captivating storytelling style, saying any part of the book could pique interest. He added that the author not only has an emotional connection to Karachi himself, but also fosters that connection within readers. Bano deemed the book a reflection of Karachi’s history, a narrative adorned with personal experiences, insights, and emotions. She praised Rahman’s authentic portrayal of his experiences.
In his vote of thanks, Rahman termed the event a personal triumph. He described the book as his second literary creation, a labor of love aimed at preserving his love for Karachi for future generations. The Sindh government’s Civil Defence presented Rahman with an award at the conclusion of the event.
