Islamabad – In a major development, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has disqualified several lawmakers from the Senate, National Assembly, and Punjab Assembly, including key opposition figures. The decision was reportedly taken on the basis of violations of electoral rules and regulations.
Among the disqualified lawmakers is Senator Shibli Faraz, a prominent member of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).Shibli Faraz had played a significant role in the upper house of Parliament, and his disqualification is considered a major setback for his party’s representation in the Senate.
Similarly, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Omar Ayub, has also been disqualified by the ECP. Other notable leaders who have faced disqualification include Rai Haider Ali Khan and Sahibzada Muhammad Hamid Raza.
Rai Hassan Nawaz Khan, a Member of the National Assembly (MNA), has also been disqualified. He was allegedly involved in concealing assets and violating electoral laws, which led to the ECP’s action against him.
From the Punjab Assembly, MPA Muhammad Ansar Iqbal and Rai Muhammad Murtaza Iqbal have also been disqualified. In addition, Zartaj Gul, a prominent female leader of PTI and former federal minister, has been declared ineligible to hold office.
Another disqualified member includes Junaid Akbar Sahi, also a Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA), who has been removed from his position as per the ECP’s ruling.
According to sources, the ECP’s move aims to uphold constitutional supremacy and ensure transparency in the electoral process. However, the decision is expected to trigger significant backlash from political quarters, and legal challenges from the affected leaders are anticipated in the coming days.
