Iran Pitches ‘Fair’ Nuclear Proposal to Avert UN Sanctions
Araghchi said the initiative, shared with Britain, France, and Germany (E3), addresses “genuine concerns”
TEHRAN: Abbas Araghchi said on Friday that Tehran has submitted a “fair and balanced” proposal to European powers and the EU aimed at preventing the reimposition of UN sanctions over its nuclear programme.
Araghchi said the initiative, shared with Britain, France, and Germany (E3), addresses “genuine concerns” and could swiftly avert a crisis if acted upon.
The UN Security Council was set to vote Friday on restoring sanctions, with diplomats suggesting Tehran lacks enough support to block punitive measures.
The 2015 nuclear accord, already weakened after the US withdrawal in 2018, has further unraveled as Iran expanded enrichment and restricted UN inspections. Tensions escalated in June when Israel launched unprecedented strikes on Iranian nuclear and military sites, killing over 1,000 people. Iran retaliated with missile and drone attacks on Israel before a ceasefire ended 12 days of conflict.
The IAEA recently warned that Iran’s enrichment levels — up to 60% — remain far above the JCPOA limit and dangerously close to weapons-grade capacity.
