KARACHI: The SZABIST Annual Book Fair 2025 opened on a high note with a vibrant and inspiring ceremony that brought together students, faculty, alumni, and prominent national figures. The event was inaugurated by Dr. Umair Haroon, alumnus of SZABIST’s MSPH program (Intake 2022) and President of Metro One News TV Channel. His presence added immense value to the occasion, igniting a spirit of intellectual curiosity and emphasizing the importance of reading and lifelong learning.
Dr. Umair Haroon, a distinguished media leader and internationally recognized creative professional, has made significant contributions to journalism, public health communication, and documentary filmmaking. Recently elected as a member of the prestigious International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the body behind the International Emmy Awards, Dr. Haroon stands as a powerful example of how knowledge and creativity can be used for public good. In his keynote remarks, he urged students to embrace books not just for academic success, but for personal growth, empathy, and civic responsibility. His journey from SZABIST student to a global media figure deeply resonated with the audience.
The event was also graced by the leadership of SZABIST. Begum Shahnaz Wazir Ali, President of SZABIST, spoke passionately about the transformative power of literature and how academic institutions have a responsibility to cultivate spaces that promote reading and critical thinking. She shared her vision of the book fair as a hub of engagement, reflection, and shared learning.
Vice President Academics Prof. Altaf Mukati highlighted the importance of building a strong reading culture in universities, reminding students that books remain timeless tools for innovation, imagination, and leadership. Vice President Projects & Finance Prof. Nasreen Haque emphasized the need for continuous support for intellectual initiatives, stating that knowledge dissemination is at the core of nation-building.
Adding further inspiration to the event was a special appearance by Daniyal Jilani, President of the National Youth Council and Deputy Project Director of Voice of Sindh. He addressed the gathering with a strong message about youth empowerment through education and communication, encouraging students to contribute meaningfully to society by staying informed, curious, and connected with their cultural roots.
