KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Labour, Human Resources, and Social Protection and President of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Karachi Division, Saeed Ghani, met with a delegation of the Gilgit-Baltistan Coordination Committee on Tuesday. The delegation was led by Advocate Amjad Hussain, Provincial President of the PPP Gilgit-Baltistan.
The meeting was also attended by PPP Karachi Division General Secretary Abdul Rauf Nagori, senior leaders Noor Alam Khan, Zakir Balti, Shaukat Gilgiti, Ijaz Badshah Balti, Karar Shah Jee, Murtaza Balti, Sharif Balti, Akbar Gilgiti, Atta Raza Gilgiti, Bakhsheer Bhutto, and Sohail Balti, along with several other members.
During the meeting, the delegation briefed the minister on the challenges faced by over 800,000 residents of Gilgit-Baltistan living in Karachi, particularly regarding delays in domicile issuance, as well as issues related to healthcare, education, and access to public and private sector jobs.
The delegation also highlighted problems in their respective areas concerning water supply, sewerage, and other basic amenities, and urged that two representatives from the GB community be given roles in each district-level PPP organization within Karachi to better raise their community’s concerns.
Speaking on the occasion, Advocate Amjad Hussain said that it was essential for the GB community in Karachi to stand united with the Pakistan People’s Party. He admitted that in the past, the GB community had not fully mobilized within the party’s structure in Karachi, and emphasized the need to strengthen the Coordination Committee down to district and union council levels to ensure that issues are addressed effectively at the grassroots.
Responding to the delegation, Saeed Ghani acknowledged the concerns and said that the domicile issue was not limited to the people of Gilgit-Baltistan, but also affected residents of other districts of Sindh due to judicial directives.
He noted that the Sindh government is the only provincial administration that, instead of issuing health cards, provides annual grants worth billions of rupees to major hospitals to ensure free medical treatment for the public. “Sindh is the only province where healthcare facilities are available at a much larger scale compared to other provinces,” he stated.
Ghani assured that those from Gilgit-Baltistan who have been living in Karachi for years—most of whom are strong supporters of the PPP—will be provided with all possible facilities.
He further announced that joint meetings between the GB Coordination Committee and PPP district presidents and office-bearers will soon be held to find concrete solutions to these issues.
In conclusion, Saeed Ghani encouraged members of the GB community to expand their political engagement and maintain regular contact with the public, rather than restricting their outreach only to election periods.
