QUETTA: The Deputy Inspector General of Prisons, Zia Tareen has stated that the department receives insufficient funds for maintenance, repairs, and rehabilitation.
He noted that sometime, even repairing a broken tube well becomes difficult due to a lack of funds.
He made these remarks during a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the Balochistan Assembly held here the other day.
During the course of meeting, the PAC Chairman, Asghar Tareen directed the concerned authorities to immediately improve basic facilities in prisons, including clean drinking water, medicines, rehabilitation programs, and hygiene arrangements.
The Chairman added that the PAC would recommend to the provincial government that funds be allocated for these facilities.
He also emphasized that the salaries and allowances of prison staff should be made equal to those of employees in other departments.
The PAC members on the occasion stressed the need to establish a Prison Training Center in the province and to grant prison staff the status of a formal force.
