KARACHI: Inspector General of Police Sindh, Ghulam Nabi Memon, has directed the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) to ensure the provision and sharing of digital and local intelligence to assist in the arrest of absconders and wanted suspects involved in murder, extortion, and other heinous crimes.

He issued these directives while presiding over a high-level review meeting at the Central Police Office (CPO) Karachi, which assessed the overall police measures and progress in apprehending fugitives linked to murder and extortion cases.

The meeting was attended by Additional IGs Karachi, CTD, Special Branch, DIGs of T&T, Establishment, CTD Headquarters, Finance, Special Branch, SSP SIU, and AIGs in person, while zonal and divisional DIGs, district SSPs, and SPs Investigation participated via video link.

During the session, zonal and divisional DIGs briefed the IG on police actions and progress regarding arrests of absconders in murder cases. Additional IG Karachi informed that police have been tasked with tracking and arresting key suspects, noting that 65% of murder incidents in Karachi stem from tribal feuds and personal clashes.

He added that police have responded promptly and effectively to extortion complaints. “In several cases, private and business disputes were deliberately framed as extortion attempts,” he said.

IG Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon noted that the arrest of criminals involved in serious offenses has significantly reduced the overall crime rate, particularly incidents of murder and extortion. “By apprehending murder suspects, we can prevent further blood feuds and tribal conflicts,” he emphasized.

Acknowledging the operational challenges, the IG urged that CTD must strengthen digital and field intelligence-sharing mechanisms to locate and capture high-profile fugitives. He directed district officers to utilize CTD’s advanced digital tools and intelligence resources, and to form specialized intelligence-based teams with clear tasking.

“The impact of police efforts in apprehending absconders should be visible and felt at the public level,” the IG stressed. He also instructed officers to engage local community elders to help resolve tribal disputes and to prepare a detailed report on progress for the next review meeting.
