ISLAMABAD – The three-day Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference (ISC) concluded today with the unanimous adoption of the Islamabad Communiqué, emphasizing the role of parliaments in tackling global challenges including terrorism, climate change, and sustainable development.
Addressing the closing session, Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, also founder chairman of ISC, called terrorism a major global threat, stating that its elimination requires military measures, parliamentary cooperation, financial oversight, and collective political resolve. He strongly condemned recent terrorist attacks in Islamabad and Wana, asserting, “Terrorists have no religion or nation; they are enemies of humanity.”
Chairman Gilani reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to global peace, stability, and dialogue, highlighting the need for joint strategies, mutual collaboration, and coordinated international action. He also warned that the accelerating pace of climate change poses a serious threat to human survival, urging parliaments to drive global cooperation on contemporary challenges.
The Islamabad Communiqué urges parliaments worldwide to strengthen dialogue, promote conflict resolution, and ensure inclusive, sustainable development in line with the UN Charter and universally recognized international law.
Key Points of the Communiqué:
Parliamentary Diplomacy: Enhance cooperation through MoUs, joint committees, youth forums, and institutional partnerships.
Peaceful Resolution of Conflicts: Promote dialogue, mediation, and the rule of law, while addressing poverty, exclusion, and regional disputes.
Sustainable Development: Commit to the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), empower vulnerable communities, and promote climate-resilient and inclusive growth.
Global Threats: Address terrorism, extremism, pandemics, food and water insecurity, cyber threats, and hate speech via bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
Regional Stability: Encourage transparent and mutually beneficial connectivity projects to enhance regional cohesion and long-term stability.
The Communiqué concludes with a pledge that parliaments will lead global efforts, inspire collective action, and work toward a just, inclusive, and sustainable world for all.
