Sudden Outbreak of Appendicitis-Like Illness in Shamshal Village, Hunza — Health Department Launches Emergency Measures

Gilgit: The Health Department of Gilgit-Baltistan has reported a sudden outbreak of an appendicitis-like illness in Shamshal village, Hunza. Since July, over 30 patients have been affected and referred to DHQ Hospital Aliabad, Gilgit, and Aga Khan Medical Center Aliabad for diagnosis and treatment.

Several patients have recovered after treatment, while some required surgeries, including appendectomies. So far, 20 patients have undergone surgery at DHQ Hospital Hunza, with two still under observation, and 11 surgeries have been conducted at Aga Khan Health Services Aliabad.

In response, the Health Department has initiated immediate emergency measures:

1. Emergency Transport Arrangements: Special ambulances have been deployed in Shamshal for patient referrals, with additional vehicles stationed in Aliabad to ensure timely transfer to major health facilities.

2. Deployment of Medical Teams: A specialized team comprising surgeons, medical officers, radiologists, health education officers, and ultrasound specialists will visit Shamshal on November 13–14 to provide on-site diagnosis and treatment.

3. Free Treatment for Affected Patients: All patients are receiving free treatment at government health centers, including both inpatient and outpatient services under emergency arrangements.

4. Health Insurance Support: Patients registered under the Jubilee Health Insurance Scheme and receiving care at Aga Khan Health Services are covered fully under the insurance program to reduce financial burden on families.

 

The Health Department, in coordination with district authorities and partner organizations, continues to monitor the situation closely to control the outbreak, provide timely treatment, and prevent further cases. Regular updates will be shared with the public
