Lahore, 29 November 2025 — Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz has launched a modern and organized waste management initiative across the province, directing the installation of color-coded waste bins in all markets, shopping malls, commercial centers, government offices, and educational institutions. The move aims to align Punjab’s sanitation and environmental protection practices with international standards.
In the first phase, the “Smart Waste Management Process” was approved last September for implementation in all public and private educational institutions across Punjab. Under the new system, different colored bins will be used for specific types of waste:
Yellow bins: Paper, packaging material, and general trash.
Green bins: Bottles, glass fragments, and discarded laboratory materials.
Grey bins: Fruit peels, leftover food, leaves, and spoiled vegetables.
Red bins: Iron and other metal waste.
Orange bins: Plastic waste.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has warned that failure to install the color-coded bins will result in legal action. The initiative aims to reduce overall waste, promote environmentally friendly practices, and facilitate recycling and reuse of collected materials.
Educational institutions can also contact the Punjab Management Helpline (1139) for waste collection services. The Local Government and Community Development Department will assist in the management of color-coded bins, while the EPA will ensure proper implementation of the plan.
The initiative is part of Punjab’s efforts to meet the United Nations’ sustainable development goals for urban sanitation and to bring the province to global standards of cleanliness and environmental management.
