Peshawar — Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Muhammad Sohail Afridi on Wednesday inaugurated the province’s new Digital Personalized Registration Marks (PRM) System, introducing a major reform in the vehicle registration mechanism.
Under the new system, the vehicle number plate will no longer be tied to the vehicle but will instead become the personal property of the citizen, similar to a CNIC or mobile number.
According to the briefing, when a vehicle is sold, the existing number will remain with the previous owner without any fee, while the buyer will apply for a new registration number for their vehicle. Citizens will also be able to retain their chosen number for up to three years without attaching it to any vehicle. Officials added that the PRM system will help eliminate fake and cloned number plates and significantly reduce the illegal use of vehicles.
Chief Minister Afridi said the reform would make the registration process digital, transparent, fast, and corruption-free, marking a milestone for the provincial government. He also directed the Excise Department to introduce a comprehensive online system for vehicle registration at the earliest.
During the ceremony, the Chief Minister announced a special martyrs’ package for the Excise Department, similar to the police, for personnel martyred during anti-narcotics operations. He praised the department’s efforts and reiterated his government’s commitment to achieving a drug-free Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Afridi further instructed authorities to launch an aggressive crackdown against major drug networks, emphasizing zero tolerance against all individuals involved in narcotics trafficking. He said the government would fully support law-enforcement bodies to ensure decisive and indiscriminate action against those fueling the drug menace
