Local Government Elections Heat Up in Quetta, Polling Set for December 28

QUETTA: The political contest for local government elections has gained full momentum in the provincial capital Quetta, with preparations entering a decisive phase ahead of polling scheduled for December 28. Streets, alleys and neighborhoods across the city have been decorated with banners and posters, reflecting the heightened electoral atmosphere, while behind-the-scenes political alignments and negotiations continue among various parties.
According to the Provincial Election Commission, local body elections will be held on 641 wards across 172 union councils in Quetta. A total of 2,870 nomination papers were initially submitted, out of which 2,541 candidates remain in the race after scrutiny and withdrawals. Official sources confirmed that 329 candidates have withdrawn their nomination papers.
Election statistics reveal that 108 wards will witness uncontested elections, with only one candidate filing nomination papers, while no candidate submitted papers in 18 wards.
At the district level, elections will be conducted in Zarghoon district across 46 union councils and 161 wards; in Lehri district, 46 union councils and 173 wards; in Sariab district, 38 union councils and 145 wards; and in Takatu district, 42 union councils and 142 wards.
With the countdown to polling day underway, political activity across Quetta continues to intensify, as parties and independent candidates make last-minute efforts to consolidate support and secure victory in the local government elections.
