Skardu Celebrates Ancient May Fung Festival With Cultural Grandeur

The ancient and historic festival of May Fung, deeply rooted in Baltistan’s cultural heritage, was celebrated with great enthusiasm and splendor under the auspices of the District Administration Skardu at the Municipal Stadium on Saturday night.
Chief Secretary Gilgit-Baltistan Abrar Ahmad Mirza graced the colorful ceremony as the chief guest and formally inaugurated the festival by releasing traditional lanterns into the night sky. On the occasion, the Commissioner Baltistan honored the distinguished guests by presenting them with traditional caps and robes, reflecting local customs and hospitality.
The event vividly showcased Baltistan’s centuries-old traditions and rich cultural identity. Performances included a traditional sword dance presented by the Tibet Arts Council, while the release of Gharoom (lanterns) created a mesmerizing visual spectacle. Stalls offering traditional cuisines, a torch-bearing procession, and a grand fireworks display further added to the festive atmosphere.
Senior civil and military officials, members of the media, and thousands of citizens attended the celebration, turning the venue into a vibrant hub of cultural expression. Participants appreciated the well-organized and disciplined arrangements, commending the district administration and relevant departments for the successful execution of the event.
The May Fung festival is not only a symbol of Baltistan’s unique cultural legacy but also serves as an effective platform for promoting social harmony, cultural continuity, and community cohesion across the region.
