SEHWAN SHARIF: The open sale and use of harmful substances including gutka, mainpuri, betel nut products, liquor, heroin, ice, opium, and cannabis is reportedly continuing unchecked in Sehwan Sharif, posing serious risks to public health and the future of the youth.
Residents allege that drug dens are operating openly across various areas of the city under alleged police patronage, with weekly payments ensuring inaction. As a result, hundreds of young people have reportedly become addicted, with several suffering from serious diseases such as cancer and other fatal illnesses. Alarmingly, even children are said to be involved in selling and consuming these substances.
Key areas mentioned include Jahaz Chowk, Station Mohalla, Bandar Mohalla, Khoso Mohalla, Makrani Mohalla, New and Old Bus Stops, and surrounding villages, where illegal liquor breweries and drug points are allegedly active. Citizens claim that despite the presence of multiple law enforcement and intelligence agencies, no effective action is being taken.
Political and social leaders, including Akbar Mallah, Muhammad Nawaz Rind, and Abdul Hakeem Baradi, have expressed grave concern, holding the police administration responsible for the growing menace. They accused authorities of targeting poor citizens for formality while allowing influential drug dealers to operate freely.
Citizens have appealed to the Chief Minister of Sindh, the IG Sindh, DIG Hyderabad, and SSP Jamshoro to take immediate notice, shut down drug dens, take legal action against involved officials, and appoint honest officers to protect the younger generation.
Responding to the allegations, DSP Sehwan Faraz Maitlo stated that police conduct raids from time to time, have arrested some drug dealers, and that further action is underway.
