WASHINGTON: The United States has decided to reduce its personnel at key NATO command and intelligence centres, triggering concern among European allies.
According to reports citing informed sources, Washington plans to eliminate around 200 positions at NATO facilities in the United Kingdom, Belgium and Portugal. European governments have been briefed on the move, which aligns with the Trump administration’s strategy of focusing resources on the Western Hemisphere.
While around 80,000 US troops remain stationed in Europe, analysts say the staff cuts are symbolically significant and could deepen unease within the alliance. The decision comes at a sensitive time as NATO faces internal debates over burden-sharing and future security priorities.
