Quetta, Sep. 29,
The Mines and Minerals Act came under scrutiny in the Balochistan Assembly after JUI lawmaker Asghar Tareen presented a resolution on behalf of opposition parties calling for a comprehensive review.
The resolution demanded that political concerns surrounding the law be addressed. Chairman of the session, Rehmat Saleh Baloch, praised Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti for assuring lawmakers that their reservations would be resolved.
Lawmakers including Zmarak Khan Achakzai and Dr. Abdul Malik Baloch expressed dissatisfaction with certain provisions, particularly the clause granting federal authority over rare earth minerals. Dr. Malik argued that while the Act had been passed under public pressure, it must be reconsidered to safeguard Balochistan’s revenue interests.
