Conference in Skardu Highlights Eco-Tourism and Environmental Awareness in Gilgit-Baltistan

The EvK2CNR, in collaboration with the University of Baltistan, organized a major conference on ecotourism in Skardu on October 17, 2025, under the Water for Development Project.
Raja Nasir Ali Khan, Minister for Planning and Development Gilgit-Baltistan, graced the event as Chief Guest.

The conference was attended by Vice Chancellor UOBS Prof. Dr. Abdul Mateen, Director CKNP Abid Ali, Director EPA GB Khadim Hussain, UNDP Technical Specialist Faheem Ahmed, Resident Representative of EvK2CNR Pakistan Riaz ul Hassan, along with representatives from Alpine Club of Pakistan, AKRSP, GBRSP, Deosai National Park, and students and faculty of UOBS.

Addressing the participants, Raja Nasir Ali Khan emphasized the importance of raising awareness among all stakeholders about ecotourism and adopting responsible, environmentally sustainable tourism practices to preserve the fragile ecosystem of Gilgit-Baltistan.
He appreciated the Italian Government’s contributions toward promoting ecotourism and environmental conservation in the region.

Prof. Dr. Abdul Mateen, Vice Chancellor of the University of Baltistan, highlighted that such initiatives play a crucial role in engaging youth and communities in sustainable tourism and environmental responsibility. He assured full institutional support for future ecotourism activities.

UNDP’s Technical Specialist Faheem Ahmed shed light on initiatives taken under the Water for Development Project to promote eco-friendly tourism.

Earlier, Mr. Arif Hussain, Regional Manager EvK2CNR, welcomed the participants and presented an overview of EvK2CNR’s two-decade-long efforts in promoting ecotourism in Gilgit-Baltistan. Institutional representatives delivered presentations on various aspects of ecotourism, while Mr. Aurangzeb, NRM Coordinator EvK2CNR, concluded the event with a vote of thanks.

The conference was part of the Water for Development Project, implemented by EvK2CNR, executed by UNDP, and funded by the Italian Government.
