President Asif Ali Zardari met with His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Amir of the State of Qatar, in Doha on Wednesday, where the two leaders discussed ways to further strengthen bilateral relations, expand defence and economic cooperation, and promote regional stability.
The Amir welcomed the President and expressed pride in Pakistan’s achievements, lauding the significant contribution of the Pakistani community to Qatar’s development. He said Qatar hoped to see the number of Pakistani workers increase substantially in the coming years.
President Zardari conveyed warm greetings and best wishes from the Government and people of Pakistan, commending Qatar’s remarkable progress and the visionary leadership of His Highness the Amir. Both leaders reaffirmed the historic and brotherly ties between Pakistan and Qatar, founded on faith, trust, and shared aspirations for peace and prosperity in the Muslim world.
The President praised Qatar’s growing global role as a hub of dialogue and humanitarian diplomacy, and paid tribute to the Amir’s leadership in advocating a ceasefire and humanitarian relief for Gaza. Reaffirming Pakistan’s solidarity, he recalled Pakistan’s consistent diplomatic support for Qatar’s sovereignty and humanitarian initiatives at international fora.
His Highness welcomed the recent Pakistan–Saudi Arabia defence agreement, calling it a “timely and necessary step.” He noted Pakistan’s unique strategic position, maintaining close relations with China, the West, and the Gulf states simultaneously.
Both leaders discussed expanding cooperation across political, economic, cultural, and defence sectors. President Zardari proposed enhanced collaboration in defence production, agriculture, and food security, which the Amir welcomed, instructing relevant authorities to begin discussions with Pakistan immediately.
The President also appreciated Qatar’s investments and humanitarian contributions through the Qatar Fund for Development, the Education Above All Foundation, and other initiatives, acknowledging the efforts of Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser and Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad Al Thani in advancing education and cultural exchange.
President Zardari commended Qatar’s role in hosting the UN-led Doha Process on Afghanistan, facilitating international dialogue on humanitarian and security issues. The Amir expressed hope that Pakistan and Afghanistan would resolve their current issues and move forward from recent challenges.
President Zardari invited His Highness the Amir to visit Pakistan, reaffirming Islamabad’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Qatar for regional peace, development, and shared prosperity. The Amir accepted the invitation and announced he would visit Pakistan early next year.
Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and Pakistan’s Ambassador to Qatar were also present at the meeting.
