KARACHI: Chairperson Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), Senator Rubina Khalid, on Monday visited the Town Municipal Corporation (TMC) Sohrab Goth, where she met Chairman TMC Lala Rahim. Pakistan Peoples Party MNA Shahida Rehmani was also present on the occasion.
Addressing the gathering, Senator Rubina Khalid said the Benazir Income Support Programme, envisioned by Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and launched in 2008, was designed to economically empower deserving families, with a special focus on women by recognizing them as heads of households. She stated that BISP has now expanded to support more than 10 million families across Pakistan and continues to function as a non-political and transparent social protection initiative.
She emphasized that all BISP services are provided free of cost and cautioned beneficiaries against fraud. She clarified that 8171 is the only official BISP contact number, while complaints can be registered through the BISP helpline 0800-26477.
Highlighting recent reforms, the BISP chairperson mentioned the introduction of the Social Protection Wallet System and the Benazir Hunarmand Programme, aimed at promoting skills development and sustainable livelihoods for beneficiaries.
The visit concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony to mark the birth anniversary of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
