Islamabad/Peshawar: An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale jolted Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and surrounding regions, triggering panic among residents. According to seismic monitoring centers, the quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, with its epicenter located in the northwestern region of Kashmir.
Tremors were felt in Peshawar, Swat, Dir, Abbottabad, Gilgit-Baltistan and Hunza, forcing people to rush out of homes and offices while reciting prayers. No immediate reports of casualties or major structural damage were received, though local administrations were placed on alert.
Emergency services were instructed to remain vigilant, and district authorities began inspections of sensitive buildings and infrastructure. Pakistan lies on an active seismic zone, and experts have repeatedly stressed the need for earthquake-resilient construction to minimize future risks.
