Protest in Girls College Tando Adam Against Illegal Canals on Indus River
Sanghar (Hasnain Ashiq Saand) protest was held in Tando Adam against the construction of illegal canals on the Indus River, led by Professor Fatima Sindhu Malokhani, Principal of Government Degree Girls College, and Professor Dr. Rabeel Gul Sheikh. The demonstration included students and faculty members who voiced strong opposition to the construction of six new canals.
During the protest, the demonstrators chanted slogans condemning the canal project. Addressing the protest, Professor Fatima Sindhu, Dr. Rabeel Gul, Professor Shahnila Gul Joyo, Dr. Amina Khatoon, Professor Shakeela Baloch, Professor Tahira Jabeen, Professor Shahana Umrani, Professor Hina Khalid, Professor Nazia Khalil, Professor Najma Sehto, Professor Umme Kulsoom, Professor Nazia Ansari, Professor Amina Sahar Gul, Professor Musarrat Zaibi, Professor Sana Khan, Professor Amina Memon, and others highlighted the severe consequences of the canal project.
They warned that diverting Indus River water to construct these canals would turn Sindh’s fertile lands barren, transforming the province into a desert. The speakers expressed concerns that the lack of freshwater reaching the Indus Delta would lead to severe coastal erosion, putting coastal towns at risk of being swallowed by the sea.
The protesters further argued that the move to irrigate Punjab’s desert areas through corporate farming would cause significant environmental damage. They warned that Sindh’s underground water would become saline, threatening trees, wildlife, and even human survival due to severe water shortages.
The protesters demanded an immediate halt to the construction of new canals on the Indus River to safeguard Sindh’s environment, agriculture, and livelihood
